Cologne shocks Bayern at German Bundesliga

BUNDESLIGA record champion Bayern Munich suffered an embarrassing defeat to Cologne as they turned a 2-0 lead to 2-3 loss yesterday.

Hoffenheim earned a hard fought 3-2 victory against Kaiserslautern while Bremen striker Claudio Pizzaro sealed a draw at last second for his team against Mainz. Wolfsburg suffered the second defeat in row against Hannover as Nuremberg stunned second positioned Leverkusen.

Bayern had the chance to shorten the 14-point gap to leader Dortmund against Cologne. It looked like a good afternoon for the Bavarians as striker Mario Gomez utilized a diagonal through pass to straddle the ball home from goal area at the 21st minute.

Two minute before break, Bayern extended the score through midfielder Hamit Altintop who insolently netted a shot from the left wing to send Cologne with a 2-0 deficit into the cabin.

Different from the first half Cologne slowly but sure took over control and rewarded with ten minutes into second half when Christian Clemens shocked the guests with a well placed curl shot from penalty area.

Cologne was on fire and utilized the chance to level the score at the 62nd minute as striker Milivoje Novakovic nodded home a cross into top right from central position of the penalty area.

For a wonder the Bavarians were unable to put up some resistance consequently Cologne succeeded to mark the surprising winner after goalkeeper Michael Rensing goal kick reached striker Novakovic who was faster than Bayern defender Badstuber to wrap his brace at the 73rd minute.

The setback moved Bayern from 3rd to 5th position with 36 points while Cologne remains on 16th position, a relegation position.

"It is unbelievable that we gave away a blatant victory. I think it is the fourth or fifth time" , head coach Louis van Gaal said.

Nuremberg irritated second-positioned Leverkusen as they scored the only goal of the match through striker Christian Eigler who hammered the ball from 20 meter into top right at the 60th minute.

He ensured the other highlight of the match when he was sent off for repeated foul play at the 86th minute. However, Leverkusen defended second position with a twelve-point gap to leader Dortmund whilst Nuremberg climbed from 10th to 9th with 29 points.

Struggling Bremen sealed a point against Mainz as striker Claudio Pizzaro flabbergasted fourth positioned Mainz with the equalizer in the dying seconds of the match. Mainz climbed from 4th to 3rd with 37 points meanwhile Bremen jumps from 15th to 13th position with 23 points.

Hoffenheim and promoted Kaiserslautern staged a thrilling match since Hoffenheim gave away a 2-0 lead, through midfielder Gylfi Thro Sigurdsson and midfielder Sebastian Rudy, during the second half as striker Erwin Hoffer and defender Rodnei pulverised the lead within two minutes. Finally Hoffenheim striker Vedad Ibisevic netted the 3-2 winner only two minutes after Kaiserslautern equalizer.

Hoffenheim had to go down the wire as defender Edson Braafheid weakened his team after he was sent off with a straight red card due to a violent conduct. The defeat moved promoted Kaiserslautern from 13th to 14th position with 22 points while Hoffenheim climbs from 8th to 7th with 32 points.

Hannover inflicted derby rival Wolfsburg the second consecutive defeat as midfielder Sergio Pinto netted a terrific shot from 23 meters into top right to mark the winner for Hannover.

The "Wolves" had the opportunity to score the leveller but midfielder Diego hammered the ball at the bar to waist the chance for a draw. The victory hived Hannover from 5th to 4th with 37 points whereas Wolfsburg vegetates on 12th position with 23 points.

Meanwhile, 17th positioned Stuttgart turned a 2-0 deficit against 18th positioned Monchengladbach to win 3-2 thanks to midfielder Timo Gebhardt who converted a penalty in the dying minutes of the match. Both sides remain on their positions, Stuttgart on 17th with 19 points and Monchengladbach on 18th with 16 points.

Already on Friday leader Dortmund shared point with Schalke at the western derby after a goal less draw. Schalke goalie Manuel Neuer saved his team the only points as Dortmund had a bunch of golden chances.
