Costa, Sturridge out of qualifiers
SPAIN striker Diego Costa has injured his left hamstring and will miss the country’s first qualifier for the European Championship, the Spanish football federation said on Friday.
The federation said in a statement that Costa underwent an MRI scan in Madrid after being injured in a 0-1 loss to France in a friendly on Thursday.
The Chelsea striker was substituted in the 67th minute of that game.
Spain plays Macedonia tomorrow in its first Euro 2016 qualifier and Costa’s place in the squad has been taken by Barcelona forward Munir El Haddadi.
Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of England’s opening Euro qualifier against Switzerland because of a thigh injury.
The Liverpool striker pulled up hurt during a training session on Friday and was withdrawn from the squad for tomorrow’s match in Basel after having a scan. Hodgson hasn’t called up a replacement yet, leaving him with three strikers — captain Wayne Rooney, Rickie Lambert and Danny Welbeck.
