Costa banned, Chelsea doctor leaves
CHELSEA striker Diego Costa was banned for three matches on Tuesday after a charge of violent conduct during his team’s 2-0 win over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge was upheld by a disciplinary panel.
Costa had denied an English Football Association charge over Saturday’s incident, not seen by referee Mike Dean, in which he appeared to raise his hands to Gunners defender Laurent Koscielny.
But the FA issued a statement on Tuesday, saying its “charge against Diego Costa for violent conduct not seen by the match officials but caught on video has been found proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing. “The Chelsea forward will, therefore, serve the standard penalty of a three-match suspension with immediate effect.”
The decision met with a prompt reaction from Costa’s club. “We are extremely disappointed with the FA Regulatory Commission’s decision to suspend Diego Costa,” Chelsea said in a statement. “We will await their written reasons before commenting further.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista won an appeal against his red card for confronting Costa after the initial incident during the weekend’s showcase match in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Britain’s Football Medical Association (FMA) yesterday confirmed team doctor Eva Carneiro’s split with Chelsea and said that she was considering legal action against the club.
Carneiro was removed from match-day duties last month after she and physiotherapist Jon Fearn were rebuked by manager Jose Mourinho for running on to treat Eden Hazard during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the season’s opening weekend, which temporarily left his team with nine players.
The FMA, which represents medical staff in British football, said it was “extremely disappointed” by Carneiro’s departure and revealed that it has been negotiating with Chelsea on her behalf.
“The FMA is extremely disappointed that Dr Eva Carneiro will not be resuming her full duties as first-team doctor at Chelsea Football Club,” the organization said in a statement.
“Having recently been contacted by Eva, we have offered our full support in attempting to negotiate a satisfactory outcome. Unfortunately this has not resulted in our preferred outcome. Chelsea considers this now to be an internal matter and it is for Chelsea and Eva’s appointed lawyers to discuss any further action.”
