Costa nets the winner for 10-man Atletico

DIEGO Costa gave 10-man Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza in the Spanish league on Sunday, and there were also victories for Mallorca, Espanyol, Almeria, Getafe and Hercules.

Costa scored in the 20th minute by tapping in from inside the penalty area after having controlled a pinpoint pass from Brazilian winger Filipe Luis at Vicente Calderon stadium.

Atletico was reduced to 10 men when Jose Antonio Reyes was sent off in the 62nd after the referee interpreted a hand movement as aggression. Argentina forward Sergio Aguero came on as a substitute for a lackluster Diego Forlan in the 75th minute.

In other matches, Mallorca beat Real Sociedad 2-0, Espanyol defeated Osasuna 1-0, Almeria won 2-0 at Deportivo La Coruna, Getafe downed Racing Santander 1-0 and Hercules topped Sevilla 2-0.

After five rounds, Valencia leads with 13 points, one more than Barcelona and two in front of Real Madrid. Atletico is fourth on 10 points.

Fernando Cavenaghi scored twice for Mallorca. He found the net in the seventh minute from Jose Luis Marti's pass inside the penalty area, and again at the far post in the 63rd from Victor Casadesus's corner.

At Cornella-El Prat stadium, Espanyol's Alvaro Vazquez pounced on a poor clearance to score in the 25th minute.

Getafe's Victor Sanchez scored in the 17th minute when his shot deflected off Santander defender Marc Torrejon's back.

Deportivo has yet to win this season and trailed in the fourth minute when Kalu Uche headed home. The Nigerian forward scored his second of the match in the 18th minute.
