Cottbus' Shao joins Chinese squad

MIDFIELDER Shao Jiayi, who plays for the German club Energie Cottbus, has been called up by the Chinese head coach Gao Hongbo and will join the national squad in Shanghai.
Shao, 26, flew into Beijing on Monday from Germany and is scheduled to arrive in Shanghai today. This is the first time Shao has been included in the national squad after China's World Cup qualifiers in 2008. Gao hopes that Shao's inclusion will strengthen the midfield for the Asian Cup qualifiers against Syria and Vietnam next month. "I have been closely following Chinese players who are playing abroad," Gao said. The national team completed a 15-day training session in Hainan Province and moved base to Shanghai for more intensive training.
