Cuca faces lengthy ban for brawl
SHANDONG Luneng’s head coach Cuca faces a lengthy ban for attacking a referee during a Chinese Super League match earlier this month.
The Brazilian attended a Chinese Football Association hearing in Beijing on Tuesday with club officials, the Yangtze Evening News reported.
Cuca reportedly assaulted linesman Zhan Wei after a CSL match between Shandong and Guizhou Renhe in Guiyang on June 4. A controversial decision by the Shanghai-based linesman led to a post-match brawl involving Shandong players, Cuca and Zhan.
TV footages and pictures showed Zhan sitting on the pitch with his hands on his head. The referees were escorted back into the tunnel by the police.
A Shandong Luneng team official later told reporters that Cuca had suffered a 5-centimeter gash in his left eye socket following the brawl with Zhan.
However, there have been reports that Cuca hit Zhan in the tunnel as well, which could not be substantiated as there was no surveillance cameras.
CFA had held a hearing earlier on June 7, which was attended by the referees and some Shandong Luneng players. Cuca did not show up for that hearing reportedly because it was his 52nd birthday.
The paper said despite the lack of video evidence, statements from Zhan and the security staff, who witnessed the incident in the tunnel, does not favor Cuca. Both sides could be punished if it is confirmed that they resorted to violence.
The CFA is yet to announce its decision. Cuca could be banned for two months to over a year if he was found guilty of assaulting the referee. Zhan also works as a football teacher at Shanghai Tongji University. The 45-year-old is due to retire at the end of this season.
