Death of Deportivo fan mars Atletico’s victory in La Liga

ATLETICO Madrid climbed above Barcelona into second in La Liga thanks to a 2-0 win at home to Deportivo La Coruna yesterday in a match overshadowed by the death of a Deportivo fan in violent clashes near the stadium.

A 43-year-old supporter of the Galician club, who was not identified by name, had to be fished out of the freezing Manzanares river near Atletico’s Calderon stadium after dozens of rival fans battled in the streets a few hours before kickoff.

He suffered cardiac arrest, hypothermia and head injuries and hospital sources later said he had died shortly after 2pm local time after failing to respond to efforts to revive him.

Eleven other people were treated for injuries, including one female police officer with a fractured hand. Twenty-four people were taken into custody, all members of radical fan groups. A total of 100 troublemakers had been identified, police said.

On the pitch, midfielder Saul Niguez had put Atletico ahead two minutes before halftime and playmaker Arda Turan made it 2-0 10 minutes into the second half to lift Diego Simeone’s side to 29 points from 13 matches, four behind leader Real Madrid.

Uruguay international defender Diego Godin told Spanish TV the troublemakers “do not represent football or any team.”

On Saturday, Real Madrid set a club record of 16 straight victories in all competitions when it beat Malaga 2-1.

In England, champion Manchester City climbed up to second in the Premier League table with an easy 3-0 victory over high-flying Southampton at St Mary’s yesterday.

City felt it should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Sergio Aguero in a goalless first half, but Yaya Toure put it in front at the start of the second period.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Eliaquim Mangala was sent off for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes remaining, but substitute Frank Lampard eased City’s nerves with a clinical strike before Gael Clichy added a third late on.

Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has dismissed as “nonsense” talk of a falling out with manager Brendan Rodgers after he was dropped from the starting lineup for Saturday’s victory over Stoke City.

Gerrard was left out of the first 11 for the match at Anfield as Liverpool arrested a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats with a nervy and hard-fought 1-0 victory that arrived courtesy of a late goal from Glen Johnson.

It was the 16th anniversary of the 34-year-old midfielder’s debut for the Merseyside club and he was keen to play down a reported rift.

“Just to set the record straight media talk of a fall out between us 2 is NONSENSE ..have a nice Sunday,” he wrote on Instagram, accompanying a picture of him and Rodgers in training.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho admitted Chelsea suffered from a Champions League hangover as it was forced to settle for a point at Sunderland. The Premier League leader was sheld to 0-0 draw at the Stadium of light, a 20th game unbeaten to start the season.

Mourinho sent out an unchanged line-up less than four days after the 5-0 romp at German side Schalke guaranteed its place in the knockout stages of Europe’s top club competition.

He said Sunderland’s greater preparation time had played a significant role in the London club failing to add to its nine-match winning streak.
