Diamanti saves Guangzhou

ALESSANDRO Diamanti came to Guangzhou Evergrande’s rescue once again yesterday as his first-half equalizer gave the AFC Champions League title-holder a 1-1 draw against Japan’s Yokohama F Marinos.

The Italian international, who inspired a stunning fightback from two goals down against Australia’s Melbourne Victory in his tournament debut, buried a superbly struck free-kick to cancel out Jin Hanato’s opener.

New recruit Diamanti, 30, playing under ex-Italy manager Marcello Lippi, now has three goals in two appearances in the Asian competition, doing no harm to his chances of selection for the World Cup later this year.

However, the Chinese defending champion dropped its first points and it currently lies second in Group G on goal difference. Korean Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are narrowly ahead following their 2-2 draw with Victory.

In Group H, South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai remained perfect and in first place after two matches with a 2-0 home win over Kawasaki Frontale of Japan. Substitute midfielder Yoo Jun-soo scored in the 84th minute to give Ulsan the lead before Kim Shin-wook clinched it in the third minute of injury time.

Striker Mark Bridge gave the Western Sydney Wanderers the lead against Guizhou Renhe in the 10th minute and the A-League side made it hold up for a 1-0 away win, leaving the Chinese side as the only team without a win in the group. Kawasaki and Western Sydney are 1-1.
