Disgraced Calderon to run for Madrid president

DISGRACED former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is planning to run for the Spanish league club's highest post only months after resigning from it, a Spanish newspaper reported today.

AS sports daily said that Calderon, who stepped down in January after being linked to a vote-rigging fraud at the club's general assembly, would present his candidature at this summer's general election.

Calderon allegedly denied access to Madrid members and allowed nonmembers to vote on his 2009 budget at the assembly in December, which was barely approved and seen as a vote of confidence.

Former president Florentino Perez is also reportedly set to run.

Perez, who steered the club during the "galactico" years of Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham from 2000-06, is believed to have AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti ready to trade the San Siro for the Santiago Bernabeu should the construction magnate win.

Calderon said earlier this month that Madrid was set to reap the benefit of his work by landing Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, with an agreement already reportedly in place for the Portugal winger.
