‘Disrespectful’ Pelle Axed
ITALY forward Graziano Pelle has been removed from the team’s squad for refusing to shake coach Gian Piero Ventura’s hand after a substitution.
The incident occurred in the second half of Italy’s 1-1 draw with Spain in a World Cup qualifier in Turin.
The Italian soccer federation said Pelle had been sent back to his club in China, Shandong Luneng, and will therefore miss tomorrow’s qualifier at Macedonia.
“The coach, in agreement with the FIGC (federation), has decided to exclude Graziano Pelle... for disrespectful behavior when he was substituted,” the Italian federation said in a statement.
“To be part of the national team involves the sharing of values which are worthy of the national team, starting with respect towards the staff, team mates and fans.”
Pelle apologized on Instagram for the incident.
“So once again I’ve done something stupid. I behaved unacceptably towards the boss (Ventura) and to my teammates, who have always displayed their values in this fantastic group of which we’re part,” he said.
“Every serious mistake inevitably has its consequences and it’s absolutely right that I take responsibility for what’s happened. It’s my duty to say I’m sorry.”
