Dortmund drubs Freiburg, Bayern tops Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund hammered hapless 10-man SC Freiburg 5-0 and Bayern Munich scraped past VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 as the two rivals stayed level on points at the top of the Bundesliga yesterday.
Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski both scored twice for Dortmund and Jakub Blaszczykowski added the fifth while winless Freiburg had Fallou Diagne sent off just before halftime.
A second-half goal for Thomas Mueller was enough for Bayern in a lackluster match against Wolfsburg, leaving the titleholder level with Dortmund on 19 points from seven games, though the latter has a superior goal difference.
Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Hanover 96 kept it one point behind in third while Hertha Berlin beat Mainz 05 3-1 and Hoffenheim rallied from two goals behind to hold Schalke 04 3-3.
Dortmund ran riot at Signal Iduna Park, breaking the deadlock on 35 minutes when Lewandowski’s shot was blocked by Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, but Reus was on hand to tap home the loose ball.
Freiburg’s fortunes took a sharp downturn when Senegalese center-back Diagne was sent off after hauling down Lewandowski and Reus drilled home the resulting spot-kick in the 47th.
Lewandowski then netted his fourth goal of the season when he held off two defenders to chip the ball over Baumann with half an hour left. The Poland forward — who has said he will sign a Bayern contract in January with his Dortmund contract to expire in June — then added his second when he converted a Jonas Hoffmann pass on 70 minutes.
Dortmund, which hosts Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday looking to bounce back from its 1-2 defeat at Napoli a fortnight ago, added the fifth when Blaszczykowski pounced on a wayward back pass and fired past Baumann 10 minutes before the whistle.
The defeat keeps Freiburg second from bottom and still looking for its first win of the season.
