Drogba debuts in China as Shenhua held by R&F
IVORY Coast striker Didier Drogba made his long-awaited China debut last night, helping Shanghai Shenhua rally to a 1-1 draw away to Guangzhou R&F in the Chinese Super League.
The 34-year-old got on the Chinese pitch for the first time in the second half and provided the assist from which teammate Cao Yunding scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.
The home team had taken the lead in the 21st minute, courtesy of an own-goal by Shenhua defender Moises.
Drogba's strike partner and former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka of France struck the post with a diving header at the end of the first half.
Drogba, who arrived in Shanghai last Saturday, replaced Moises after the break. Though he had a few good touches, the former Chelsea striker seemed to lack match fitness.
In other CSL games over the weekend, Dalian Aerbin beat Shandong Luneng 5-2 at home, Beijing Guo'an lost 0-2 to Hangzhou Greentown, Henan Construction lost 1-2 to Guangzhou Evergrande, Guizhou Renhe won 3-1 over Shanghai Shenxin, Qingdao Jonoon lost 1-2 to Dalian Shide, Changchun Yatai won 2-1 over Liaoning Whowin and Jiangsu Sainty beat 3-2 Tianjin Teda.
After 18 rounds, Guangzhou Evergrande continues to lead the CSL table on 39 points, followed by Jiangsu Sainty (35) and Guizhou Renhe (30). Guangzhou R&F is fourth on 28 points while Shenhua is 12th with 20.
