Drogba on target as Shenhua wins

A JUBILANT Didier Drogba, putting behind him weeks of speculation that he might be on his way out of China because of a boardroom row, pulled off his jersey and displayed his muscular frame in front of home fans after scoring the third goal in Shanghai Shenhua's 3-0 victory over Liaoning Whowin last night.
Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Giovanni Moreno and Joel Griffiths all started in the Chinese Super League game, which seemed to put to rest speculation over their contracts.
The futures of Drogba and Anelka, in particular, were put in doubt last month when a newspaper claimed that owner Zhu Jun, who pays the huge wages of the star pair, had threatened to withdraw funding. The report said that Zhu was upset that he was not given a majority stake as previously agreed when he took over the club in 2007.
However, with Anelka and Drogba doing the running, Shenhua drew first blood against Liaoning last night in the 38th minute, with 20-year-old midfielder Zheng Kaimu powering a shot past a crowd of players in front of Whowin's box that went to the right corner of the net.
Whowin pushed forward in search of an equalizer, allowing Shenhua plenty of opportunities to extend the lead. But it was not until the 84th that the host found the net again. Left back Bai Jiajun, 21, hit a sensational shot after breakaway attack. Drogba sealed victory in injury time with a volley on another breakaway.
"It was a tough game. The first half was pretty balanced, with both teams having chances. But we controlled better in the second half and took our opportunities," Shenhua's Argentine coach Sergio Batista said.
Shanghai moved up to ninth on 30 points, still 17 points behind leader Guangzhou Evergrande. Liaoning has 26 points after 24 matches.
In other games, it was: Tianjin Teda tied 1, Dalian Shide 1; Dalian Aerbin 0, Guangzhou Evergrande 0; and Jiangsu Sainty 2, Shanxi Renhe 0.
