Drogba to play for Shenhua next Wednesday

Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba is likely to make his debut as a Shanghai Shenhua player in the CFA Cup match next Wednesday, a club official confirmed today.

The 34-year-old, who helped Chelsea to win the UEFA Champions League title, will arrive in Shanghai on Saturday morning, the club said. Club fans are encouraged to go to the Pudong International Airport to welcome their hero.

Shenhua has scheduled a welcome press conference for Drogba on Saturday afternoon and a small reception in the evening at Hongkou Football Stadium when Shenhua plays with Beijing Guo'an in a Super League match.

The official said he was unclear whether Drogba would play on Saturday but he would interact with his fans during the game.

Drogba's first game for Shenhua should be the third round of CFA Cup against Changchun Yatai on July 18, said Zhu Jun, the chief investor of Shenhua.

A struggling Shanghai Shenhua dropped one position to the 13th of the 16-team league after Sunday's game. Sergio Batista's team failed to score a win in the last four games.
