East Asia romps past city rival

SHANGHAI East Asia walloped city rival Shanghai Shenxin 5-1 in its first home game of the Chinese Super League at Shanghai Stadium yesterday afternoon.
Shenxin’s Brazilian forward Kieza scored the opener eight minutes into the game. But Lu Wenjun grabbed the equalizer for East Asia with a stunning overhead kick in the 36th minute. What followed next was a romp.
The home side won a penalty before the break with Wu Lei scoring from the spot. Swedish striker Tobias Hysen grabbed a brace in the 69th and 85th minutes. East Asia midfielder Wang Jiajie’s long-range effort in the 90th finished off the game at 5-1.
“The score does not reflect the true ability of the two teams,” said Lu Wenjun. “We are at home and we gave a good performance.”
It was Shenxin’s second straight defeat after losing to Shanghai Shenhua 0-2 at home in the opener last week.
Shenhua flops at home
Shenhua lost 1-3 at home to Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday.
Greentown’s Ivory Coast striker Davy Claude Angan scored twice to give the visitors’ a 2-0 lead half an hour into the game. Xu Liang’s strike from a freekick gave Shenhua some hope before going into the break. But Greentown’s Brazilian striker Gilberto Macena made it 3-1 in the 69th minute.
Shenhua said it has to beef up its defense. Xu Liang’s poor back pass led to the first goal. “We need to go back and study all the three goals carefully,” Shenhua head coach Shen Xiangfu said.
Shenhua will visit Beijing Guo’an next week in the third round.
Meanwhile, Shenhua fans voiced their unhappiness over the change in the club’s name and emblem. Some of them turned their back to the pitch while “Give Shenhua back” could be heard loudly throughout the match.
The club’s new owner Shanghai Greenland Group removed “Shenhua” from the registration name and then removed it from the team’s emblem which irked the fans.
In other CSL games yesterday, Changchun Yatai and Henan Jianye drew 0-0 as did Guangzhou R&F and Liaoning Whowin. Guangzhou Evergrande beat newly promoted Harbin Yiteng 4-1 on Saturday.
Evergrande and Beijing Guo’an stand on top of the 16-team league table with 6 points apiece, followed by Shanghai East Asia, Hangzhou and Guizhou Renhe, all with 4 points.
