El Shaarawy fuels Milan fightback
STEPHAN El Shaarawy scored twice as AC Milan recovered from a goal down to defeat Catania 3-1 on Friday and climb up to seventh place in the Italian Serie A in a game where both sides finished with 10 men.
Fresh from its 1-0 win over league leader Juventus last weekend, Milan continued its recovery from a disastrous start to the campaign when it lost five of its first eight games.
But Milan did it the hard way in Sicily on Friday after slipping behind to an 11th-minute header from Nicola Legrottaglie.
Its fortunes turned when Catania had Pablo Barrientos sent off for a second bookable offense in the 49th minute.
Four minutes later, El Shaarawy levelled despite a hint of offside in the build-up involving Robinho. Kevin-Prince Boateng made it 2-1 to Milan in the 56th with a fine drive although the Ghana international was red-carded in injury time for a dangerous tackle.
However, El Shaarawy settled Milan's nerves by adding his second of the night and 12th in the league this season in the second minute of time added-on.
In Germany, Fortuna Duesseldorf demolished 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 on Friday to move further away from the Bundesliga relegation zone and inflict a second straight defeat on its rival.
The Duesseldorf club is up to 13th on 18 points while Frankfurt, with only one win in seven matches, is stuck in fifth spot on 24 points having set the best Bundesliga start by a promoted team with four straight wins.
Leader Bayern Munich, 10 points clear on 37 points, was hosting champion Borussia Dortmund yesterday.
