Elkeson transfers to SIPG

Guangzhou Evergrande striker Elkeson will join Shanghai SIPG for the new Chinese Super League season, the Shanghai club said yesterday.

The 26-year-old will arrive in Shanghai soon for a physical before signing a contract with his new club, SIPG said on its official website.

SIPG is reported to have paid a record 18.5 million euros (US$19.63 million) for the Brazilian, who will not be allowed to take the field when SIPG meets Evergrande in the CSL.

The duration of the contract was not revealed. Elkeson spent his previous three seasons in Guangzhou, scoring a total of 77 goals for the CSL champion. He also helped Evergrande to the AFC Champions League title twice in the past three years, and was the CSL top scorer in 2013 and 2014.

He will be able catch SIPG’s first 2016 AFC Champions League qualifier on February 9 if the contract is signed in time. Sven Goran Eriksson’s SIPG finished second in the 2015 CSL season, two points behind Evergrande.

Evergrande, the reigning five-time CSL champion, said it allowed Elkeson to join SIPG to help bolster its CSL rivals’ chances of continental glory. “For the purpose of supporting Chinese teams to compete in the AFC Champions League, and for national glory, we agreed Elkeson’s transfer to Shanghai SIPG club,” Guangzhou said in a statement.

Meanwhile, AC Milan has welcomed Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano back to the club after his move to CSL side Jiangsu Suning broke down after a reported contract dispute.

Adriano was due to sign for Jiangsu in midweek, AFP reported.

Reports yesterday suggested the Brazilian forward reneged on the deal after discovering a sizeable part of his salary would come from the sale of his image rights.

However, it was also reported Jiangsu did not agree to all of Adriano’s personal terms.

Adriano returned to Milan on Wednesday and did not look too unhappy, posting a picture of himself smiling on his Instagram account.
