Eriksson unsure of Gyan for AFC tie

SHANGHAI SIPG coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is optimistic of a positive result when his side takes on Korean outfit Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC in the AFC Champions League at Shanghai Stadium today.

“The preparation has been good. We have no major injury worries except for (Asamoah) Gyan. We are not sure yet whether he will be able to play tomorrow. I think we can win,” Eriksson said yesterday.

The Ghanaian striker picked up a muscle injury in the leg in the second half of SIPG’s 1-2 loss to Melbourne Victory last week. It was the Chinese Super League side’s first match on the Asian stage.

Captain Sun Xiang also missed the first match with injury, but is expected to be ready for the game tonight.

The team has set a modest goal of advancing from the group stage in its first season in the Champions League. Despite the loss in its very first match, Eriksson was full of praise of the team’s performance.

“The way we played (against Melbourne Victory) was good, at least good for the future,” the Swedish said. “We are definitely a better team compared to last season, though other teams in the CSL have all improved and we are not the only good team.”

Eriksson said Brazilian striker Santos and South Korean midfielder Kwon Chang-hoon were the key players for Suwon Samsung Bluewings and SIPG should particular attention to them.

“I think the home fans will give our players more support rather than pressure.”

“I don’t think the players will be nervous (playing in front of a home crowd),” the Swede said.
