Espanyol finally wins at home

Espanyol applied relentless pressure and forward Christian Stuani scored twice to rout Valladolid 4-2 yesterday for its first win at home in four Spanish league games.

Espanyol was helped by forward Sergio Garcia and midfielder Victor Sanchez, both scoring and setting up another as Javier Aguirre’s side settled into the middle of the league table.

“We got a great result,” Stuani said. “We won the game from the start. It was a perfect way to say farewell to the year.”

Javi Guerra and Victor Perez salvaged some pride for Valladolid with goals in the 75th and 89th.

Guerra has 11 league goals this season, tied with Real Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann for third highest scorer.

Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa leads the league with 19 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid has 17.

Later, Barcelona was at Getafe without Lionel Messi, Neymar and Xavi Hernandez, needing a win to maintain its share of the league lead with Atletico (46 points), which edged Levante 3-2 on Saturday, with Costa scoring a brace.

Andreas Ivanschitz had stunned the Vicente Calderon inside two minutes as he slotted home the first league goal Atletico had conceded at home since early October.

Also yesterday, Real Madrid was traveling to Valencia, Athletic Bilbao hosting Rayo Vallecano, and Osasuna was at Celta Vigo.

The league takes a two-week winter break from today.
