Espanyol grabs season's 1st away victory
ESPANYOL got its first away victory of the Spanish league season yesterday, a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad that provisionally lifted it out of the relegation zone.
Sociedad had carried the weight of the game at Anoeta stadium until Diego Colotto tapped in a short pass from fellow center back Hector Moreno while sprawled on the ground following a corner kick in the 77th minute.
Espanyol's much-needed second win through 10 rounds kept it unbeaten in four league matches, while Sociedad remained winless in four games, including the Copa del Rey.
On Saturday, Barcelona's 3-1 home win over Celta Vigo marked the Catalan club's best start to the Spanish league in its 113-year history.
Its ninth win through 10 rounds maintained an eight-point gap over defending champion Real Madrid, which beat Zaragoza 4-0 at home, and left it alone at the top after Atletico Madrid's 23-game unbeaten run in all competitions was ended by Valencia 2-0. Real Madrid got goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Angel di Maria, Michael Essien and Luka Modric.
Barcelona's previous best start came under Dutch coach Louis van Gaal in 1997 when it had eight wins and a draw.
Adriano and David Villa scored in the 21st and 26th minutes to give Barcelona a 2-1 advantage by halftime, with Mario Bermejo netting for Celta in the 24th. Villa played Jordi Alba clear to put the result beyond doubt in the 61st.
