Espanyol slumps but Sevilla in hot form

ESPANYOL'S Champions League aspirations suffered another setback when it lost 1-2 at home to Real Mallorca in La Liga on Tuesday.

The Barcelona-based side let slip a one-goal advantage and lost to a late strike from Emilio Nsue for its fifth defeat in six league outings.

The team which had been one of the revelations of the early part of the season remains fifth on 40 points from 26 games, seven short of fourth-placed Villarreal, which could pull further away with a victory at home to Hercules yesterday.

Sevilla is two points behind Espanyol in seventh after a comfortable 3-0 home win over 10-man Sporting Gijon.

The visitors to the Sanchez Pizjuan were a man short from the 28th minute when Sebastian Eguren was sent off for bringing down Luis Fabiano in the area, and the Brazilian striker made no mistake from the spot. Diego Perotti and Alvaro Negredo completed the scoring.

At Cornella-El Prat, Alvaro Vazquez beat the offside trap to put Espanyol ahead in the 19th but in the 63rd Pierre Webo rose to head in the equalizer from a freekick.

The Cameroon striker then lashed a shot against Kameni's near post and with seven minutes to go Nsue reacted quickest to score after the Espanyol keeper could only parry a fierce shot.

Mallorca has climbed to 10th with 34 points.
