Eto’o nets for Everton, Newcastle surprises Spurs

SAMUEL Eto’o scored Everton’s first and last goals in a 3-1 win over Burnley yesterday that left the promoted team still without a win in nine Premier League games.

The former Barcelona striker put the visitors ahead in the fourth minute by heading in off the bar from Leighton Baines’ cross, and clinched victory with a curling shot in the 85th.

Burnley, the only team in England’s top four divisions without a win, equalized in the 20th when Romelu Lukaku surrendered possession to allow Lukas Jutkiewicz to play in Danny Ings, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net.

Lukaku made amends in the 29th, scuffing a right-foot shot into the corner to restore Everton’s lead. Everton climbed into the top half of the standings.

In another match, Sammy Ameobi scored within eight seconds of coming on as a halftime substitute as Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.

Newcastle’s first away win was another boost for manager Alan Pardew, whose job was under threat after failing to win any of his first seven League games of the season.

Emmanuel Adebayor gave Tottenham the lead after 18 minutes with a header from Ryan Mason’s cross.

But Spurs were pegged back right at the start of the second period when Ameobi equalized with his first touch after replacing Gabriel Obertan at the interval.

Ayoze Perez, a 21-year-old from Tenerife, then scored on his full debut for Newcastle.

In Spain, Luis Suarez made a strong return from his four-month biting ban on Saturday, showing no signs of being rusty and providing the biggest threat Barcelona could offer in a 1-3 loss at Real Madrid.

Suarez set up Neymar’s fourth-minute opener and provided the most constant danger up front for the visitors, while Lionel Messi was kept in check by Madrid’s defense.

“Obviously, after such a long time not playing you are relieved to be back,” said Suarez. “But I take away a bittersweet feeling because of the result.

“I’m thrilled to play again and begin a new chapter. You always want to debut with a victory. I leave with the sensation that the team did all it could to win but it wasn’t to be.”

Suarez already appeared familiar with his new teammates as he crossed for Neymar to dribble along the front of the area before firing in the opener in the fourth minute.

Madrid leveled through Cristiano Ronaldo’s 35th-minute penalty. Pepe scored from a corner kick in the 50th and Karim Benzema hit on the break in the 61st to deal Barcelona its first league loss of the season.
