Euro spot for Schalke, Duesseldorf relegated
SCHALKE clinched the last Champions League place in Germany by beating SC Freiburg 2-1 in the final round of the Bundesliga yesterday.
Fortuna Duesseldorf was relegated but Hoffenheim escaped automatic demotion by winning 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund, however, that was only after Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski's injury-time goal was ruled out for offside.
Lewandowski made it 1-0 in the sixth minute. But Sejad Salihovic equalized from the penalty spot in the 77th, and scored another spot kick five minutes later after Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller was sent off.
Duesseldorf lost 0-3 at Hannover, and Augsburg took advantage by beating bottom side Greuther Fuerth 3-1 to secure Bundesliga survival.
Eintracht Frankfurt drew 2-2 with VfL Wolfsburg to earn the Europa League spot, and champion Bayern Munich won 4-3 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Bayern dug deep for its 29th league victory in 34 matches as Franck Ribery scored twice, then set up Arjen Robben for the winner. Fielding the side likely to start the Champions League final at Wembley next Saturday, and despite previously conceding only four goals away all season, Bayern leaked three goals in the first action-packed 10 minutes.
Elsewhere, it was: Nuremberg 3, Werder Bremen 2; Hamburger SV 0, Bayer Leverkusen 1; and VfB Stuttgart 2, Mainz 2.
