Everton rallies to stun United
Substitutes Dan Gosling and Jack Rodwell scored late goals yesterday as Everton came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 in the English Premier League.
After Dimitar Berbatov had given United a 16th-minute lead, Everton equalized through Diniyar Bilyaletdinov three minutes later.
Gosling fired the home side ahead in the 76th, and Rodwell went on a weaving run to hit the third in the 90th after having only been on the field for three minutes.
The result meant that United, on 57 points, is in danger of losing ground to Chelsea, which was visiting Wolverhampton later and will go four points clear with a victory.
"It's a bad result for us at this time of the year," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We can't afford a result that we had today. We hope that others will drop points."
United appeared on the way to another victory to keep the pressure on Chelsea when Berbatov scored. The Bulgarian international expertly controlled a low cross from Antonio Valencia and hammered the ball into the roof of the net.
The lead didn't last long, however. United allowed Bilyaletdinov too much room and the Russia midfielder drilled the ball into the net from 20 meters with his left foot.
Landon Donovan squandered an easy chance to put Everton ahead in the 38th when the ball dropped to him 5 meters out. The American, who is on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, was too hurried and completely mis-kicked his shot.
Everton manager David Moyes, who was without injured midfielders Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini, sent on Gosling for Bilyaletdinov and he put his side ahead. Released down the left by Donovan, Steven Pienaar crossed low for Gosling to turned the ball in from 10 meters.
Although United pushed for an equalizer in an entertaining, end-to-end game, it was all over when 18-year-old Rodwell collected the ball just inside United's half in the final minute. He burst through the middle before firing a diagonal shot past goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
