FIFA To Tighten Security After Fan Incursion

FIFA will tighten security for the World Cup final and third-place playoff after Wednesday's incursion onto the field by an Italian fan carrying a vuvuzela.

The semifinal between Germany and Spain in Durban was interrupted briefly in the fourth minute when the fan ran onto the pitch to protest about the exclusion of a player from Italy's squad.

FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said yesterday that police were investigating the matter but that the breach in security was "certainly not acceptable." Maingot says FIFA "will tighten the controls again."

The fan entered the field near Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's net and sprinted almost to midfield before he was caught by security and escorted away by police.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that the intruder is named Mario Ferri, who was wearing a blue T-shirt with a slogan protesting the absence of forward Antonio Cassano from Italy's national team at the tournament.
