FIFA switches kickoff time
FIFA has switched the scheduled kickoff times of seven World Cup matches, including England versus Italy which was due to start at 3am Central European Time.
That Group D match will now kick off three hours earlier at 6pm local time (2200 GMT) in the hot and humid Amazonian jungle city of Manaus.
Two more games in Manaus — Portugal versus United States in Group G and Cameroon versus Croatia in Group A — have been pushed back three hours to 6pm local time.
FIFPro, the international footballers’ union, had pressed FIFA not to have the earliest kickoffs in the hottest and most humid weather conditions.
The England-Italy switch means the Ivory Coast versus Japan match in Group C will now start at 10pm local time in the tropical coastal climate of Recife.
The draw for the 2014 World Cup was made in Costa do Sauipe, a beach resort, on Friday.
