Federici shines as Aussies hold Serbia goalless

AUSTRALIA had goalkeeper Adam Federici to thank as it held on for a 0-0 draw against a profligate Serbia in a friendly in Melbourne yesterday.

Federici stood firm as Serbia, which lost 1-2 to Australia in the group stage of last year's World Cup in South Africa, peppered the goal in a frantic second half in front of a crowd of more than 28,000 on a chilly night at Docklands Stadium.

James Troisi missed the Socceroos' best chance when, having only the keeper to beat, he prodded a weak shot into Damir Kahriman's arms in the 79th minute.

Both countries fielded second-string sides in a tune-up for the qualifying phase for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In Yokohama, Japan, two impressive saves from Petr Cech allowed the Czech Republic to hold Japan to a 0-0 draw yesterday, as the tri-nation Kirin Cup ended without a goal being scored.

The Blue Samurai and the Czechs had both failed to break down Peru in the two previous games before Chelsea goalkeeper Cech ensured the winner-takes-all clash also finished in a stalemate.

Also yesterday, Koo Ja-cheol struck in stoppage time to give South Korea a dramatic 2-1 win over Ghana at Jeonju in an international friendly.

The Wolfsburg midfielder was introduced as a second-half substitute and his goal maintains Korea's impressive form, coming four days after a 2-1 victory over Serbia.

Elsewhere, an experimental France side came from behind to beat Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine 4-1 in a friendly in Donetsk on Monday with Marvin Martin scoring twice on his debut for Les Blues after coming off the bench.

It was a timely win for France after it was held to a 1-1 draw with Belarus in a Euro 2012 qualifier last week.
