Ferdinand faces ban over conduct
MANCHESTER United defender Rio Ferdinand could be banned for three games after the Football Association charged him with violent conduct for apparently elbowing an opponent.
Ferdinand only returned to action after three months out on Saturday but was filmed clashing with Hull forward Craig Fagan.
United won 4-0 to return to the top of the Premier League but the FA charged him on Tuesday after watching the video of the match.
Ferdinand was to respond to the charge later yesterday and the FA will hear the case today.
The England international would miss matches against Arsenal, Portsmouth and Aston Villa if banned.
Meanwhile, police have arrested seven more fans in connection with violence at last week's League Cup semifinal between Manchester City and Manchester United, ahead of last night's second leg.
Trouble broke out inside and outside the City of Manchester Stadium when City beat United 2-1 in the first leg and police arrested 18 people last week.
Greater Manchester Police, which has released TV footage of the violence to try and identify some of the troublemakers, announced that four more were arrested on Tuesday and three yesterday and called for calm ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford.
They were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and police said they expected to make further arrests.
"Many families, including women and young children, attend football matches so it is totally incomprehensible that a small number of mindless thugs would incite violence when they are surrounded by people clearly terrified by their actions," said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Roters.
