Figo thrills fans in charity match

Luis Figo set up goals for Fernando Hierro and Ivan Perez as Old Real Madrid beat Shanghai Clever FC 3-0 at Shanghai Stadium last night in a charity match.
Lead by Figo, former FIFA World Player of the Year, the Spanish side comprised other ex-Real Madrid players including Michel Salgado, Palencia, Pavon and Santi Aragon.
Shanghai Clever FC is an amateur football club that was established this year featuring names familiar to local fans. Captained by former Chinese national team ace Fan Zhiyi, the team also boasts former Shanghai Shenhua players like Xie Hui, Zhu Qi and goalie Yu Weiliang in the lineup.
Real started to gain the edge in attacking when Hierro’s shot hit the post in the 25th. Figo came close in the 34th when his shot from the top of the box curled past defender Liu Yue and hit the bar.
In the 37th, Figo’s pinpoint pass found Hierro in the box, who headed home for Real’s opening goal.
The second half started in heavy rain.
In the 55th, Figo interrupted Clever goalie Yu’s clearance and passed the ball to Ivan Perez, who scored easily although the home side protested that the goal was offside.
The visitors added to their lead three minutes later, when striker Tote dribbled the ball into Clever FC’s box and slotted it home to make it 3-0.
Sergio Sestelo came on for Figo in the 80th minute.
Clever FC striker Xie was realistic about the outcome.
“Our opponent is on a much higher level,” said Xie, who arrived in Shanghai one day before the game. “The intensity is demanding for players without regular games. We are still happy about the big gathering of old mates in Shanghai together with world class stars.”
Figo said the trip has been a good experience.
“To be able to make the trip to Shanghai is more important than the result of the game,” said Figo, who is from Portugal.
