Five-star City pummels Notts County
MANCHESTER City scored three times in the closing minutes as England's richest club beat the country's oldest league club Notts County 5-0 in an FA Cup fourth-round replay at Eastlands yesterday.
Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Micah Richards all scored late goals as English Premier League City sealed a fifth-round tie against Aston Villa following two earlier headers from Patrick Vieira.
City, transformed by the money of Abu Dhabi billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour, stayed on course for its first trophy for 35 years with what turned out to be a comfortable win over the League One (third division) side which started the brighter team and was a tougher opponent than the scoreline suggested.
Karl Hawley almost put Notts ahead when he crashed an inswinging shot against Joe Hart's left-hand post after 28 minutes, but after that City wrested control.
Vieira, who played in Arsenal's FA Cup winning teams of 1998, 2002 and 2005, headed its first two goals from corners, before Tevez rounded Notts keeper Stuart Nelson after a breakaway in the 84th minute to make it 3-0.
Dzeko headed City's fourth five minutes later before Richards completed the scoring with a thumping hooked shot in the 89th.
On Saturday, Phil Neville scored the decisive spot kick to give Everton a 4-3 penalty shootout win over holder Chelsea after their fourth-round replay ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time at Stamford Bridge in London.
The fairytale run of minnows Crawley Town also ended although the non-League side left Old Trafford with its head held high after only losing 0-1 to Premier League leader Manchester United in their fifth round tie.
Crawley, bidding to become the first team from outside the League to reach the last eight for 97 years, fell behind to a 28th-minute header by Wes Brown but almost equalized in stoppage time when Richard Brodie headed against the top of the bar.
Premier League clubs Birmingham City and Stoke City beat lower league opposition far more easily than United, Birmingham seeing off League One Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 and Stoke beating League One leader Brighton by the same score.
In Premier League yesterday, Carlos Vela scored his first goal for West Bromwich Albion in stoppage time to earn a crucial 1-1 draw against relegation rival Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It canceled out a first goal for Wolves from Jamie O'Hara, who curled a 20-meter shot past Boaz Myhill in the 39th.
While Wolves remain bottom of the Premier League, West Brom are a point and a place clear of the drop zone after Roy Hodgson's first game in charge.
