Fixing claims worry Premier League chief
English Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore yesterday urged anyone with information about match-fixing in the English top flight to report the matter to police.
He was responding to a claim by an online betting expert that two Premier League matches since 2000 have shown signs of suspicious betting patterns.
Mark Brosnan, chief executive of online betting firm Matchbook.com, told the Daily Telegraph that, concerning one of the games: “In my opinion, there’s only a one percent chance that it was just a big coincidence.”
Scudamore reacted by saying: “This is an allegation of criminal acts. It is the most serious allegation that can be made about anyone involved in sport. It is about the most serious attack that can be made on sport.
“Anyone with allegations, information or evidence should report it to the police. There are processes in place through which they, the Gambling Commission and the Football Association, are to act following receipt of such information. We would of course assist any such investigation.”
Two men suspected of fixing matches in lower-league English football were remanded in custody by magistrates on Friday.
The men, alleged to be members of a Singapore-based betting syndicate, were among seven people arrested this week in an investigation by the recently formed National Crime Agency.
Chann Sankaran, a 33-year-old Singapore national, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, a 43-year-old British passport-holder, were remanded in custody until December 13 by magistrates in Cannock.
Meanwhile, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is expected to miss his side’s Premier League trip to Hull City today after the club announced yesterday that he has sprained his ankle.
The 24-year-old England international, who has scored nine goals this season, sustained the injury in training.
“Liverpool Football Club can confirm Daniel Sturridge will be assessed by the club’s medical staff today (Saturday) after the striker rolled his ankle in training,” read a statement on the Liverpool website.
In his last Liverpool appearance, Sturridge came off the bench to score an 89th-minute equalizer in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Everton last weekend.
Toffees’ striker Romelu Lukaku says he is willing to remain on loan at Everton next season if Roberto Martinez’s side seals a place in the Champions League.
Lukaku was allowed to leave Chelsea on loan and the Belgium striker has made a big impression at Goodison Park, scoring seven times to lift Everton into contention for a top-four spot.
The 20-year-old has been in such good form that some have questioned whether Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a mistake by letting Lukaku leave.
Mourinho responded by claiming Lukaku had been determined to force a move because he didn’t think he would be given the chance to play ahead of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba.
