Football forum focuses on youth development

THE 2017 China (Shanghai) Youth Football International Forum was held in Shanghai this week.

As a sub-event of the 2017 Shanghai International Youth Football Tournament which gathered 10 Under-12 teams from home and abroad, the forum invited coaches and officials from the youth clubs, as well as local football experts to share their opinions about the development of youth football.

Coaches from Japan and Spain talked about their experience of how to help children balance academic study and football training.

“A systematic training only started in China about two decades ago,” said Wu Jingui, former Shanghai Shenhua head coach. “More foundation building is needed, as well as combining sports with traditional education. Football is just part of one’s life, a hobby which is important to the forming of character. A footballer should still continue with academic study like all others.”

Wu also pointed out that China lacks a youth league system which allows young footballers to make progress through competitions.

Shanghai SIPG youth team coach Cheng Yaodong said to keep children’s interest towards football should be a coach’s responsibility.

“There are wins and defeats, and a coach should teach young footballers how to face the results with a positive attitude. It’s a coach’s responsibility to cultivate their interest towards the sport, and spend more time on studying training methods,” said Cheng.
