Former national defender Zhang Enhua dies at 48
Former national defender Zhang Enhua has died, multiple media outlets confirmed yesterday. The cause of death was reportedly due to alcohol.
The tragedy happened only a day after Zhang’s 48th birthday. Zhang spent most of his career playing for Dalian Shide and was the first choice right or center back for the national team at all levels. He was with Dalian when the team won all seven of its national championships. Zhang also played for Grimsby Town in the EFL League One (second-division back then) for five months between 2000 and 2001. Having made 59 appearances for the national team, Zhang scored five goals, including the winner in the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in 1997. His former team, now Dalian Pro, mourned his death on Weibo.
