France beats 10-man Turkey from spot
FRANCE striker Karim Benzema scored a penalty to give his team a 1-0 win over a 10-man Turkey in a friendly on Friday that was stopped briefly after fans threw objects on to the field.
Benzema scored in the 39th minute after Nicolas Anelka was fouled by defender Ibrahim Uzulmez, who was sent off for the foul.
"I think we played well. It's a logical result," Anelka said. "We had a lot of chances but we were average in terms of our finishing, but I think it was a good match to watch."
Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel almost kept out Benzema's penalty and then made several saves to keep the score down.
"We could have wrapped things up a lot earlier," France defender Jean-Alain Boumsong said. "We knew the Turks play with little touches and play off each other. But we contained them well and we deserved to win."
Referee Manuel Grafe stopped the match briefly in the 78th minute after Turkish fans threw flares and objects on to the field. Play resumed several minutes later after Turkey striker Tuncay Sanli and coach Fatih Terim had pleaded with the fans for calm.
Demirel twice denied Franck Ribery in quick succession in the second half and kept out Yoann Gourcuff's dipping free-kick. But he was saved by his post in the 88th after Sidney Govou had burst through. France substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac missed two more chances late on, while teammate Jean-Alain Boumsong had a header cleared off the line.
A mistake in Turkey's defense saw Uzulmez head the ball softly toward Demirel, and Uzulmez kicked Anelka's ankle as he took the ball off him. Uzulmez's red card forced Terim to replace Mevlut Erdinc with Eren Gungor.
It seemed like France was playing an away match with large sections of Lyon's Stade Gerland decked out in the red, with chants of "Turkiye" ringing out and many Turkish flags being waved.
