Gao handed 5-match ban for gesture

GUANGZHOU Evergrande striker Gao Lin was handed a five-match ban by the Chinese Football Association for making a “slap in face gesture” towards fans after scoring in a match against Liaoning Whowin.

Gao scored a brace in Evergrande’s 3-1 victory over host Liaoning in the 20th round of the Chinese Super League on July 18. Some Liaoning fans had been abusing Gao through out the match. After scoring his second goal in the 72nd minute, Gao celebrated by making a gesture towards the home fans, which seemed like he was slapping someone’s face. The gesture drew more boos from the stands.

When Gao walked out of the stadium under the protection of security guards after the match, a fan waiting beside the tunnel abused Gao and his wife, which annoyed the striker, who threw a shoe towards the offender.

The ban means Gao will miss some of Evergrande’s crucial league matches, including clashes against Shanghai Greenland Shenhua and Shanghai SIPG. The defending champion, under the guidance of Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, lies second in the CSL table, one point behind leader SIPG.

National team player Gao is not much liked by some Liaoning fans, as the striker has scored some crucial goals for Evergrande against Liaoning over the previous few years.

After helping Evergrande beat Liaoning 3-0 in an away match in 2012, Gao put a figure in front of his mouth, hinting that the fans should shut up, which was taken as a provocation.
