Getafe beats Real Betis on Castro strike

GETAFE beat Spanish league leader Real Betis 1-0 on Monday after Diego Castro's first-half goal secured the club's first win of the season.

Betis had won all four of its previous games, and its first loss left it one win short of matching the best start in club history.

But Getafe outplayed the visitors at Alfonso Perez stadium throughout, and Castro capped a counterattack in the 31st with his team's first goal in three games, which proved enough for the much-needed victory.

"Diego Castro is a player that has it in him to do great things," Getafe coach Luis Garcia said.

"He is very talented and gives us a lot of options. I congratulate my players for handling the pressure they were under."

Betis remained in first place with 12 points, one more than defending champion Barcelona, Levante and Sevilla. Real Madrid, Malaga and Valencia are next with 10.

Over the weekend, Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to lead Barcelona to a 5-0 win over Atletico Madrid, while Cristiano Ronaldo also scored three as 10-man Madrid downed Rayo Vallecano 6-2.

In England, Norwich earned its first home win in the Premier League this season, taking advantage of slack defending to beat Sunderland 2-1 on Monday.

Leon Barnett put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute after winger Elliott Bennett had skipped into the right side of the penalty area and delivered a low cross for the defender to slot into the net from close range.

Wales forward Steve Morison powered in a header at the start of the second half after the visitors were again caught napping at the back, before substitute Kieran Richardson drilled in a late consolation.

Unchanged

The win puts newcomer Norwich in ninth place with eight points from six matches, while Sunderland is 14th with five points.

Both teams were unchanged from last weekend, when Norwich won at Bolton and Sunderland routed Stoke 4-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Norwich made the brighter start but failed to seriously threaten goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, and Sunderland gradually worked its way into the match.

Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, on loan from Arsenal, set up Craig Gardner at the edge of the area, but he misfired and sent his shot high and wide.
