Guangzhou FC denies deal extension for Cannavaro
Chinese Super League side Guangzhou FC has denied the rumors of a possible contract extension for head coach Fabio Cannavaro, a club source told Xinhua yesterday.
The former Italian skipper started his second stint at Guangzhou in 2017, and struck a five-year deal with the CSL powerhouse. The 47-year-old led the formerly Guangzhou Evergrande to the top-flight championship in 2019, the first major title in his coaching career, but lost the two-legged final of the league last November. Cannavaro’s current contract is due to expire in 2022. Guangzhou has reportedly handed a two-year extension to the Italian with a wage cut. “From what I have been told, for now we have no intention to pen a new deal,” the insider said. The 2006 World Cup winner arrived in China in mid-January and is going through obligatory quarantine before being able to join the club’s winter training.
