Guangzhou dominates AFC鈥檚 top honor list
Asian Champions League winner Guangzhou Evergrande dominated the shortlist for the Asian Football Confederation awards yesterday with captain Zheng Zhi nominated for the Player of the Year.
Led by Zheng, Guangzhou became the first Chinese winner of the AFC Champions League last Saturday, pipping FC Seoul on away goals.
Zheng, ex-Celtic and Charlton Athletic and skipper of China’s national team, will vie with fellow midfielders Esteghlal’s Javad Nekounam of Iran and South Korean Ha Dae-sung of FC Seoul for the coveted prize.
Guangzhou’s Argentine recruit Dario Conca and his Brazilian teammate Muriqui have been nominated in the Foreign Player of the Year category along with FC Seoul’s Montenegro forward Dejan Damjanovic.
Muriqui, who scored a record 13 goals for Evergrande in the AFC Champions League, will be eyeing a treble of honors, having already scooped the AFC Champions League’s Most Valuable Player and Top Goalscorer awards.
Inter Milan’s Japanese defender Yuta Nagatomo, Bayer Leverkusen’s Son Heung-min and Japanese playmaker Keisuke Honda of CSKA Moscow will compete for the Asian Foreign Player of the Year award, for the best Asian footballer based outside the region.
The winners will be announced at the Asian Football Confederation awards night in Kuala Lumpur on November 26.
