Guangzhou nets Robinho as SIPG goes top in CSL

BRAZILIAN international Robinho signed a six-month contract with Guangzhou Evergrande yesterday — the last day of the Chinese Super League’s mid-season transfer window.

The CSL defending champion announced on its official website yesterday afternoon that the 31-year-old joined the club as a free agent, and will wear the No. 60 jersey.

The announcement said Robinho would undergo a medical before joining the team in Guangzhou on July 20. The club also owns priority in future contract extension with the Brazilian.

Evergrande did not reveal Robinho’s contract details, although an earlier report by Xinhua cited Brazilian media as saying his monthly income would reach 1 million euros (US$1.09 million) — almost triple the amount he earned at his previous club Santos of Brazil.

“Considering the number of injured players in the team, manager Luiz Felipe Scolari wanted to ensure a healthy squad to handle the league and Asian Champions League matches, and therefore required the club to introduce the world class player Robinho, who is capable of playing in any position in the frontline and midfield,” the statement said. “Scolari said he approves Robinho’s ability, and their previous cooperation in the national team proved that Robinho is a player who can understand and follow the coach’s directions well.”

Rohinho would likely replace his compatriot Alan, although Evergrande still boasts a total of five Brazilians. The team has set a goal of defending its CSL title, while also striving for the Asian crown which it won in 2013.

Evergrande currently lies third on 38 points in the CSL standings, which is led by Shanghai SIPG, following its defeat of Tianjin Teda last night, thanks to new signing Asamoah Gyan.

The Ghana captain scored one goal and created a penalty for the hosts in their 2-1 win, which also marked his CSL debut.

Tianjin opened the scoring when Argentine striker Hernan Barcos made use of a poor back pass by SIPG captain and defender Sun Xiang in the 35th minute. Gyan was sent onto the pitch by manager Sven-Goran Eriksson in the second half, which proved to be the turning point of the match.

He was fouled by Tianjin goalie Du Jia in the box in the 57th. Davi stepped up to the penalty spot and netted the equalizer. Gyan then scored a header in the 79th on an accurate pass by Wu Lei to seal the vital three points that propelled the hosts to the top spot in the league.

“I haven’t touched ball for like a month, but we don’t have a choice as the team has no other strikers,” Gyan said in a postmatch interview. “I’m very experienced so there is no problem working together with my teammates. What I have to do now it to raise my fitness level.”

SIPG has 41 points after 19 rounds, and will take on current runner-up Beijing Guo’an next Monday. Beijing is two points behind SIPG after losing 1-3 at Shanghai Shenhua Greenland on Wednesday.
