Guangzhou sanctioned for provocative fan banner
CHINESE Super League champion Guangzhou Evergrande has been fined and handed a suspended two-match stadium ban after its fans unfurled a “British dogs” banner during an AFC Champions League match at Eastern in China’s Hong Kong last month.
The banner was displayed late in Guangzhou’s 6-0 win over the Hong Kong champion on April 25. Guangzhou, two-time winner of the continental competition, was found guilty of two offenses; the first under an Asian Football Confederation disciplinary and ethics code with the second related to spectator misconduct. “Guangzhou Evergrande were ordered to play two future matches in AFC club competitions which they host in China PR without spectators, with both matches suspended for a probationary period of two years,” the AFC said in a statement yesterday. “They were also fined US$22,500.”
