Guerrero under probe for attack on fan
HAMBURG SV striker Paolo Guerrero, who threw a plastic bottle at an angry fan on Sunday, could face a suspension after the German soccer federation launched an investigation into the incident yesterday.
The striker, who only recently returned from a seven-month injury absence, was caught on camera turning and throwing a plastic water bottle at a Hamburg fan while walking off the pitch after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Hanover 96.
The fan reportedly shouted at Guerrero, "Go back to Peru!"
"The DFB has initiated an investigation against Paolo Guerrero.... Guerrero is suspected of a violent act against a spectator," the DFB said in a statement yesterday.
"Television pictures show him throwing a bottle into the stands and hitting a spectator in the face."
A district attorney has also opened an investigation into the incident.
Prosecutors spokesman Bernd Mauruschat said Guerrero could be charged with causing bodily harm.
The fan, who has not filed a complaint, was examined by medical personnel at the stadium.
Guerrero has already been fined an undisclosed amount by his club with German media putting that figure between 50,000 euros (US$67,050) and 80,000 euros.
The former Bayern Munich striker has also apologized for his behavior. "I blacked out," he told reporters on Monday. "I am very sorry and hope to have the chance to meet the spectator and apologize."
Hamburg, in the running for a Champions League spot earlier, is in danger of losing out on European soccer completely after winning only two of its last 11 league games.
