Gunners are a serious title threat, Arteta says

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal has demonstrated they should be taken seriously in this season’s Premier League title race.

The weekend victory at Cardiff City maintained Arsenal’s four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table and they will attempt to consolidate their position when Hull City visit the Emirates Stadium today.

Yet despite Arsene Wenger’s side dominating the opening third of the season, the title claims of their main rivals including Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have continued to attract support.

But Arteta believes they made a powerful case when they returned from a testing trip to Cardiff — a place were United and City have dropped points this season — with a victory.

“Considering they beat Man City here and they drew against Man United, just shows you what a tough place this is.

“For us it’s a big statement to come here and get the points.”

Manchester United manager David Moyes claimed his side’s title bid will gather momentum this month as he prepares to welcome former club Everton to Old Trafford today.

The Red Devils have slipped down to eighth place in the table after consecutive 2-2 draws on the road against Cardiff City and Tottenham Hotspur. But with fixtures against sides lower down in the league, including Aston Villa, Stoke, Hull and Norwich, to come after the game against Everton, Moyes thinks they will be back among the title challengers fairly soon.

“We are concerned that we are not as close as we would like to be but it is a long season and I do think we have got room to get better and progress. That is without a doubt,” he said.

Meanwhile, Manchester City defender Gael Clichy said he is confident the club can sustain a title challenge provided they fix their troublesome away form.

City travel to West Bromwich Albion today with the worst record on the road of any of the top nine teams in the table.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side has won just once this season in its six league away games, with four defeats and one draw.

“Maybe we need to be more focused in the last pass, the last moment, in the box, and score the first goal. When you score the first goal, the game is different,” said Clichy.
