Gyan leaves SIPG, moves to al-Ahli on one-year loan

SHANGHAI SIPG’s Asamoah Gyan is leaving the Chinese Super League for UAE side al-Ahli on a one-year loan, according to a statement on the Ghanaian striker’s official website.

“Arabian Gulf League (AGL) champions al-Ahli have strengthened their attack with the acquisition of former al-Ain striker Asamoah Gyan. The 30-year-old has returned to the UAE, on a one-year loan deal, just 12 months after signing for Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai SIPG,” said the statement. Al-Ahli is a fierce rival of al-Ain, where Gyan spent four productive years between 2012 and mid-2015. He then joined Sven-Goran Eriksson’s SIPG on a two-year deal and was reportedly earning a weekly salary of 227,000 pounds (US$298,000). However, Gyan was hampered by injuries, and his place in the first team was taken by Brazil international Hulk in July. He scored a total of seven goals in 20 CSL appearances for SIPG. Hulk, however, picked up a knee injury in his CSL debut match on July 10. Though the Brazilian is expected to be back next Friday when SIPG hosts Beijing Guo’an at Shanghai Stadium.
