Gyan poised for SIPG switch

Ghana national team captain Asamoah Gyan is flying to Shanghai this week to discuss a contract with his potential new employer, SIPG.

Officials of the Chinese Super League team declined to unveil further details about the deal, only saying that Gyan is scheduled to arrive in Shanghai today, and will undergo a medical arranged by the club. A contract will be signed only after the two sides have agreed on all the details of the paperwork.

While city rival Greenland Shenhua completed the purchases of two big-name foreign players during the CSL’s ongoing mid-season transfer window, SIPG has maintained a low key, providing little information about how the club planned to improve the first team or hinting at potential signings.

Gyan, who played for the United Arab Emirates side al-Ain, started his career in the Ghanaian Premier League. He has experience at European clubs like Udinese (Italy), Rennes (France) and Sunderland (England), and is the leading scorer for the Ghana national team with 48 goals in 90 appearances.

He represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup scoring the fastest goal of the tournament 68 seconds into kickoff — against the Czech Republic. Another widely remembered moment of his career was during the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal against Uruguay, when Gyan missed the penalty awarded as a result of Luis Suarez’s goal line handball.

SIPG currently sits second in the CSL standing, behind Beijing Guo’an, after collecting 35 points from 17 matches. Managed by Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, the team has done well recently, winning four straight league matches.

The arrival of the 29-year-old Ghanaian striker means Eriksson will have to decide which foreign player is to be replaced before the transfer window closes on July 16. With Argentinean Dario Conca and Swedish striker Tobias Hysen crucial to the team, the choice will be between Ivory Coast striker Jean Evrard and Brazil midfielder Davi.
