HK company in talks to buy FC Sochaux

A HONG Kong company is in talks to buy French club FC Sochaux-Montbeliard, as a rising number of Chinese businessmen expand into the foreign sports market.

“Talks are under way” but no agreement has been reached, Andrea Leung of Tech Pro Technology Development, a listed electrical components maker in the southern Chinese city, said yesterday. Leung is secretary to chairman Li Wing-sang.

The once-glamorous side from eastern France was founded in 1928 as a works team for the Peugeot car factory, and has won both the Ligue 1 and French Cup titles twice. It was relegated last year from the top league.

Chinese entrepreneurs are looking to increase the nation’s influence in global sports with mainland billionaire Wang Jianlin recently buying 20 percent of Spanish champion Atletico Madrid.
