Hammers get nod

WEST Ham United has been selected as the preferred bidder to occupy the London Olympic stadium after the 2012 Games, the Olympic Park Legacy Company said yesterday. West Ham defeated London Premier League rival Tottenham Hotspur in the battle to inherit the 496 million pound (US$796 million) stadium. The unanimous recommendation from the OPLC needs to be rubber stamped by the government and London mayor Boris Johnson. The authorities are keen to have a viable tenant to ensure that the stadium, centerpiece of the 9.3 billion pound Olympics, helps to regenerate one of the poorest parts of the UK capital.
