Hanover dents Schalke's hopes

SECOND-PLACED Schalke 04's German Bundesliga title hopes were severely dented when it slumped to a 2-4 defeat at relegation-threatened Hanover 96 yesterday.

With four games left, Schalke remains a point behind leader Bayern Munich, which can open up a four-point gap with victory against third-placed Bayer Leverkusen later.

Hanover, battling to avoid the drop, opened up a surprise 2-0 lead with an own-goal from Schalke captain Heiko Westermann and Didier Ya Konan's solo effort on the half hour.

The visitors needed only seven minutes in the second half to level through Edu and Ivan Rakitic's penalty, but were punished for neglecting their backline in search of a third goal, when Hanno Balitsch was left unmarked in the 80th to fire in from the edge of the box.

Konan scored his second goal deep into stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund also lost, going down 0-1 at Mainz; Werder Bremen thrashed SC Freiburg 4-0, VfB Stuttgart beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 and FC Cologne won 2-0 at Hoffenheim.

In Scotland, Ross County pulled off one of the Scottish Cup's biggest upsets yesterday when it beat mighty Celtic 2-0 in their semifinal to end its opponent's last chance of silverware this season.

The 34-time Cup winner, which trails rival Rangers by 13 points in the Scottish Premier League, went down to two well-taken second-half goals from Steven Craig and Martin Scott to slump to one of its most humiliating defeats.

An organized Ross County, fourth in the Scottish First Division (second division) and in its first Cup semifinal, reveled in the occasion at a sun-drenched Hampden Park and outplayed its more illustrious opponent. The defeat is likely to damage temporary manager Neil Lennon's hopes of a permanent appointment at the Glasgow club.

Ross County's final opponent will be either Dundee United or Raith Rovers, which play today.
