Hernandez steals Suarez limelight

Manchester United’s reward for beating bitter rival Liverpool in the English League Cup is a clash against Norwich City, while Arsenal will host Chelsea in the tie of the fourth round.

Javier Hernandez’s second-half strike at Old Trafford clinched a 1-0 third-round win over Liverpool, subduing Luis Suarez on his return from a 10-match ban, on Wednesday and just minutes after full-time David Moyes’ men learnt they will host the Canaries in the last 16 in the week commencing on October 28.

“You always want a home draw if you can get it,” manager Moyes told Sky Sports. “Norwich are a good side, they have got a good manager (Chris Hughton) and we will give them every respect.”

Arsenal’s young team held its nerve to beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties at the Hawthorns on Wednesday and that set up a mouth-watering London derby against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, which won 2-0 at Swindon on Tuesday.

Manchester City has been handed a trip to Newcastle United, which beat Leeds United 2-0 on Wednesday.

Birmingham City ousted holder Swansea City 3-1 and has been handed another home match in the last 16, this time against Stoke City, who won 2-0 at Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday.

Tottenham Hotspur takes on Hull City at White Hart Lane, while managerless Sunderland, which sacked Paolo Di Canio this week, plays host to Mauricio Pochettino’s Southampton.

West Ham United faces Championship opposition in Burnley at Turf Moor, while Martin Jol’s Fulham is also on the road at second tier Leicester City.

At Old Trafford, Mexican Hernandez lost his marker and steered home a Wayne Rooney corner a minute into the second half and United held on despite being outplayed for large periods by a Liverpool side welcoming back Uruguayan Suarez for the first time since April.

Welcome fillip

It was a welcome fillip for Moyes, who had been desperate to avoid a second defeat to a major rival in quick succession after Sunday’s 1-4 Premier League loss to Manchester City.

Suarez, who missed the end of last season and the start of this one for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, had dominated the headlines in the run-up having caused controversy in previous games against United.

The script was written for him to make a decisive impact, but he was upstaged by Hernandez who showcased his finely-tuned eye for a goal with a typically clever finish. He left his marker Jose Enrique flat-footed in the box and found a meter of space to sidefoot home.

“The movement is great for the goal, that’s what Chicharito is all about. He finds space so well,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

The goal was largely against the run of play as Liverpool dominated possession, but its neat and tidy approach play frequently lacked any end product.

Arsenal had looked to be heading out of the competition when it was two goals down in a penalty shootout against West Brom but Craig Dawson and Morgan Amalfitano missed for the hosts, allowing Monreal to smash home the decisive kick.

The match had finished 1-1 with Arsenal’s 20-year-old German midfielder Thomas Eisfeld grabbing the opener on 61 minutes in his second game for the club, before Saido Berahino headed in at the far post to level 10 minutes later.
