Hertha sacks Luhukay to stem the rot

STRUGGLING Hertha Berlin sacked coach Jos Luhukay yesterday, a day after its 0-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, a third straight loss that left the team from the German capital deep in relegation trouble.

Former Hertha player and reserve team coach Pal Dardai will take over, assisted by Rainer Widmayer, the club said as the team prepares to travel to Mainz tomorrow for a league clash.

Hertha has lost five and won just one of its last seven Bundesliga games and Wednesday’s defeat dropped it to 17th in the table, two points above last-placed Borussia Dortmund. The club is bidding to avoid its third relegation from Germany’s top flight since 2010.

“Hertha part ways with coach Jos Luhukay with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “After analyzing the current situation, the club decided on Thursday to also part ways with assistants Markus Gellhaus and Rob Reekers.”

The 51-year-old Dutchman took over Hertha after it was relegated to the second division in 2012 and helped it win promotion in his first season in charge. He also had spells at Augsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Luhukay is the fourth German league coach to be dismissed this campaign after Bremen sacked Robin Dutt in October, Mirko Slomka was let go by Hamburg in September and Jens Keller lost his job at Schalke in October.

Meanwhile, Dortmund, the 2011 and 2012 German champion, is also in trouble and coach Jurgen Klopp admits the team deserves to be criticized after fans jeered its 11th defeat of the season.

Dortmund lost again on Wednesday, 0-1 at home to fourth-placed Augsburg, which played the last 20 minutes with ten men.
