Heynckes to take over at Bayern
JUPP Heynckes will return for a third stint as coach of Bayern Munich after the German side confirmed yesterday he would replace Louis van Gaal at the end of the season.
The club said Heynckes, previously at the helm from 1987 to 1991 and again in 2009, would take over on July 1 on a two-year contract. "Jupp Heynckes was the candidate we were wishing for," Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on the club website. "We're very fortunate." The move was expected after Heynckes announced earlier this week that he will not extend his contract at Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen is second in the German Bundesliga and can keep Bayern from clinching automatic qualification for next season's Champions League. Bayern is fourth, seven points behind Leverkusen and two behind Hannover. The team finishing third enters the qualifying stage for the Champions League. Bayern is 14 points behind Borussia Dortmund with seven matches to play.
